Prostate cancer:
anatomy, diagnosis and management
Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men in France.
It usually develops slowly from cells in the prostate, a small gland located below the bladder that plays an essential role in producing seminal fluid. Often silent in its early stages, it is sometimes discovered during a simple screening examination. Although the diagnosis can be worrying, many forms of prostate cancer progress slowly and can be managed effectively with appropriate treatments. Understanding the disease, how it works and the available treatment options is a key step in making informed decisions together with your medical team.

What is the prostate ?
Its size and volume vary with age and from one individual to another. Located below the bladder and in front of the rectum, the prostate gland surrounds the upper part of the urethra (the tube that carries urine from the bladder to the outside of the body).
Prostate cancer
All organs in the body are made up of cells that are specialised for different functions. There is a continuous process of regeneration through cell division.
Treatments
The treatment strategy is tailored to each individual case. It depends primarily on the characteristics of the cancer affecting the patient: its location, grade and stage.
