Prostate cancer:
anatomy, diagnosis and treatment
Prostate cancer is the most common cancer experienced by men in France. It generally develops slowly, starting in the cells of the prostate, a small gland located below the bladder which plays an essential role in the production of seminal fluid. Often silent at first, it is sometimes discovered during a simple screening test. Although a prostate cancer diagnosis can be worrying, many forms of prostate cancer develop slowly and can be effectively managed with suitable treatment. Understanding the disease, its mechanisms and the available treatment options is an essential part of making informed choices together with your medical team.

What is the prostate?
Its size and volume vary with age and from one individual to another. Located below the bladder and in front of the rectum, the prostate gland surrounds the upper part of the urethra (the tube that carries urine from the bladder to the outside of the body).
Prostate cancer
All organs in the body are made up of cells that are specialised for different functions. There is a continuous process of regeneration through cell division.
Treatments
The treatment strategy is tailored to each individual case. It depends primarily on the characteristics of the cancer affecting the patient: its location, grade and stage.
